On January 21, several members from the Roosevelt Unified Basketball team were selected to compete against the Unified team from Lincoln High School during an ISU men’s game at Hilton Coliseum in Ames. Thousands of fans at the game had the opportunity to watch this show of inclusion among our wonderful athletes. Roosevelt is eager to see the positive effects this game will have in the Des Moines community. (In fact, two neighboring districts have already reached out to Roosevelt to learn how they can get similar programs started!)
Roosevelt has been nominated as a #1 Unified Sports School, and the students in the school’s Best Buddies play a big role in this recognition.
The Unified Program, which runs in cooperation with the Special Olympics, combines students with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team to foster inclusion, sportsmanship, and fun.
